City of Albany to take greater control of Water, Gas & Light
ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
Albany City Commissioners officially took greater control over the Water Gas and Light Commission, Tuesday night.
Commissions voted 4 to 3 to give the city manager the power to hire and fire the utility's general manager.
WG&L must also give regular reports to the city manager.
Commissioner Christopher Pike says the move could save taxpayers money.
"There are a lot of duplications of services between the two entities. There may be some potential to eliminate a lot of that duplication and so that's something we'll be looking at in the near future," said Pike.
The city will not be responsible for daily operations at Water Gas and Light.
Commissioners also voted 5 to 2 to require the Southwest Regional Airport director to report directly to the Albany City Manager.
Supporters say they made the change to be consistent. The Airport director will still oversee daily operations at the airport.
