ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A $15 Million housing development has stirred up controversy in northwest Albany.

Developers want to build townhouses and single family homes on 25 open acres in the 31-hundred block of Old Dawson Road. They say the project could generate up to $500,000 in new annual tax revenue for the city.

But neighbors say it will create traffic jams and bring down real estate values. One resident said too much rental property could hurt the stability of the community.

"We don't want to become a rental community. That's one of the most important facts we want to get out, is we don't want Albany to be a rental community. There's no stability in rental," said Linda Taylor, homeowner.

Taylor said she would rather see the open space turned into a park.  Developers say the undeveloped land only brings in $3,500 in tax revenue for the city.

There will be a public hearing on a proposed zoning change before city commissioners are scheduled to vote on the matter March 26th.
