Elementary school offers healthcare

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A new clinic, a joint partnership of AAPHC and the Dougherty County School System, comes complete with two exam rooms and will be open during school terms to provide immediate access to health services for students attending Turner Elementary.

The new center is made possible through demonstration project grant funding by Healthcare Georgia Foundation with grant oversight by Emory University.

Parents are encouraged to come with their children for scheduled visits, but with prior consent, children may be seen without parental oversight.

"School based health centers deliver quality health care to children who otherwise might not have access to care or who might not seek care." said Clifton Bush, Specialty Services Director for Albany Area Primary Health Care. "School-based health centers help kids get the health care they need, when they need it, so they can get on with their studies and lead healthier lives," said Bush. "They are a smart investment."

School-based health centers provide basic quality health care services such as shots, asthma and diabetes management, nutrition advice, and mental health intervention such as grief therapy, help with peer pressure and bullying and suicide prevention.

They make sure students who don't get medical treatment anywhere else get it in school, and give students medical attention when they need it, catching problems like asthma and diabetes now, preventing bigger problems later.
