Teens in Brunswick baby murder to be tried as adults

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The two teens charged with murder in the shooting death of a Brunswick baby will be tried as adults.

In1994, the General Assembly passed a bill that automatically treats anyone 13 or older as adults in Superior Court if they are charged with one of the so-called seven deadly sins.

Dougherty DA Greg Edwards says it's hard to say if the law has deterred violent crime among teens, but he believes the law is necessary in some cases.

"I think it's an important tool for prosecutors and more over it is appropriate in certain cases because some crimes are so serious that simply the resources of the Juvenile court aren't equipped to deal with the issues presented by the crime," said Edwards.

If convicted as an adult, minors are housed in a youth detention center until the age of 17 when they're transferred into adult prisons.
