New businesses coming to Moultrie, boosting economy

Millions of dollars in private investment is underway in downtown Moultrie.

Two new restaurants and a new event center are in the works and an existing business is moving to the heart of downtown.

As Phillip Viohl continues to work on the building where his new upscale southern cuisine restaurant will be in downtown Moultrie, he knows this is one of several big things coming to the area.

"This block in Downtown, right across our beautiful courthouse is about to really explode and do some wonderful things for the community," said Viohl.

His business is one of two new restaurants set to open in the City. Blue Sky Grill will move to the old Friedlander's building along with an event center that can seat 250 people.

The anticipation is creating a lot of buzz in this quiet town.

"We have the second most likes of restaurants here in Moultrie on Facebook with a little over 1200 and we haven't cooked a meal yet," said Viohl.

And buzz isn't the only thing being created. The new businesses will pour millions of dollars into the city's economy and bring in dozens of jobs.

"The money that the investors are going to be spending in getting their facilities ready, they're putting in close to $2 million. With all the 3 projects we're probably be having close to 60 or 70 jobs," said Main Street Director Amy Johnson.

"We have a lot of fast food, but like a decent restaurant, we don't have too many," said resident Amy Mills.

Moultrie resident Amy Mills says the new businesses are long overdue.

"A lot of my friends, we always say we wish a decent restaurant would come here. That's what we really need because when you go out you have to go out of town if you really want a decent restaurant," said Mills.

Hopefully, those dollars will stay in town now.

In a domino effect, some other downtown Moultrie businesses will extend their hours to help bring in more money to the Area.

Viohl's restaurant is expected to open in June. The other two businesses are set to open in the fall.
