New motor vehicle tax brings changes to Dougherty Co.

Denver Hooten Denver Hooten
DOUGHERTY CO., GA (WALB) -

If you've experienced long lines at the Dougherty County tag office, you're not alone.  The new motor vehicle law, which took effect March 1st, has brought in a lot of foot traffic.

Dougherty County Tax Director Denver Hooten gave commissioners an annual report Monday morning.   She says they've had longer lines and longer transaction times because the process is more involved.

You'll now pay a one-time, 6.5% title tax instead of sales tax and the annual ad valorem tax.  The change could impact overall funding for the county.

"We're not quite sure how the County and the local governments are going to come out on that. It's going to take a few months just to see exactly, it depends a lot on how many people opt in, how many vehicles are purchased and just going forward," said Hooten.

As of Monday morning, $151,000 has been generated from the new title tax in Dougherty County.
