Congressman Bishop meets Lee County students

Rep. Sanford Bishop, (D) Georgia Rep. Sanford Bishop, (D) Georgia
LEESBURG, GA (WALB) -

Some south Georgia middle school students received a unique economics lesson on Monday, when they heard from a leader who has a lot of influence on our national economy.

Congressman Sanford Bishop talked to Lee County Middle School students about a national investment competition in which they got $100,000 of pretend money to make simulated investments in the stock market.

Middle school students investing the imaginary money are representing the congressman's district in the national competition. While many students hope to win the Capital Hill Challenge, Bishop used his time to speak about the importance investments and economic growth

"What they are to be they are now becoming," said Bishop, (D) Georgia. "And they should take advantage of every opportunity to learn as much and to get the basic foundations that they need because they're getting the tools for the rest of their lives."

Bishop used Georgia's peanut industry to illustrate free enterprise to the future business leaders and workers. He spoke about supply and demand of peanuts within the agricultural market, and how prices can change. An example many students quickly understood.

"Well even though we're a small community, we can affect our country through our decisions and how we affect the economy," said Justin Seo, Lee Co. Middle School Student.

Seo was among the regional winners during the last Capital Hill Challenge, and won a trip to Atlanta. He and his team member are set to head to the state capital sometime this May.

"Me and my partner, we worked together and we bought stocks and did a lot of research to find which stocks were doing the best. So we bought those and ended up making the most amount of money and winning," Seo said.

The stock market game has been shown to improve students' math skills and student investor knowledge. Studies also show participating students achieve higher scores in standardized tests.

Teams of three-to-five students participate in the stock market game in schools across the country. The top five teams and their teachers this year will win a trip to Washington D.C., where they will meet members of Congress and tour national monuments.
