Historic post office trying to stay open

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Leaders in Albany met in Washington, D.C., Wednesday to talk with Postal officials about why the downtown location is needed.

One of those leaders, Frances Krack said the branch is in talks with a private Albany company to take over the Broad Street branch.

"We're not asking them to continue to maintain the USPS here. We're just asking them to give us the opportunity to put a new entrepreneur in this location to be able to keep this business in our downtown community," said Frances Krack.

Frances Krack is the property manager of the postal service. She wants to maintain the location for people in the community in wheelchairs that can not go to the Slappey Boulevard branch.

She is urging folks not to close their post office boxes. She says since the announcement of closing the post office, people have started moving their boxes to other locations.

The private company plans to give the post office a boost with some needed changes.

"They'll add some amenities that will go along with this, Federal Express and UPS. Just other options that is here that we can utilize," said Krack.

Krack say she has received calls about how the rerouting of mail is an inconvenience for some, but she is optimistic that the downtown location will remain open.

"It's a must, a must to keep this open and we will do everything we possibly can do to make it happen," said Krack.

Krack feels the private company is something that could help the post office in the long run.

Back in October, the postal service announced in October that doors will close at this location in December, but their lease was extended to September.

The United States Postal Service has not made a final decision to close the downtown location.

Mayor Hubbard and the city manager also made the trip to Washington.

The Federal Station Post Office is on the National Register of Historic Places list.
