Concealed weapons could be legalized on college campuses

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The gun debate in the Georgia General Assembly has taken a new turn. The House Public Safety Committee has made big changes to a Senate proposal that called for guns to be allowed in bars, churches and college campuses.

The House bill allows bars and churches to decide for themselves if guns will be allowed on their grounds. However, the House bill still allows guns to be brought on college campuses. The guns on campuses is drawing plenty of opposition, including the entire Board of Regents.

"Our officers take the exact same approach that the law in its current form is the best way to ensure the safety of our students, faculty and staff," said Tracy Goode, Darton State College Dean of Institutional Advancement.

The University of Georgia chancellor has spoken against the proposal. He says university police believe the bill would create a greater safety risk.

A 2010 Bill allows licensed gun owners to keep their weapons in their parked cars in university or college lots.
