MEIGS, GA -

A recently troubled south Georgia town now officially has a new Mayor.

Cynthia Chaney was elected this week as the Mayor of Meigs in Thomas County.

Chaney won by a 23-vote margin against challenger Linda Eason-Harris.

Chaney has been the acting mayor since former Mayor Andrew Wurst resigned in August.

She says fixing the city's financial situation is the top priority.

"We can minimize costs, but at the same time we can produce services for the community that we have to provide for them. And and at the same time our administrative budget can be streamlined."

Chaney will serve as mayor for at least the remainder of Wurst's term, which ends December 31st.

Another election, for new four-year term, will be held in November.
