ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The Governor's board of Georgia teens calls for harsher penalties for teens who text while driving.

South Georgia teenagers say they think that's a good idea.

For teens who continue to text and drive after a first citation,  the teen board recommends a graduated punishment system with penalties similar to DUI crimes.

Some South Georgia teens say those harsh penalties might save lives.

Deerfield Windsor Junior Madison Sauls said "I do , because when it's affecting your future it all of the sudden becomes a lot more serious than what it is."

Deerfield Windsor Senior Robert Newsome said "With more harsher punishment then they wouldn't do it anymore, so I think if harsher punishment means it will stop them, it will be safer on the roads."

Board members recommended that driver's education courses include a greater focus on the dangers of distracted driving.
