ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
Today marks the tenth anniversary of the beginning of the Iraq war. U.S. troops invaded Iraq on March 19, 2003 and remained in the country for more than nine years.
During the operation, Sadam Hussein was overthrown, and more than 134,000 Iraqis and 4,800 Americans were killed.
Military officials say experience from the Iraq war has provided lessons in how to deal with other conflicts in the Middle East.
"I think there's lots of lessons from what we've learned from conducting a war like what we've had in Iraq," said Col. Yori R. Escalante, Marine Corps Logistics Command Chief of Staff. "And I think we're using those same lessons right now in Afghanistan. Being able to have the right amount of resources, being able to focus on the right areas, being able to turn an insurgency the right way."
The last convoy of U.S. troops left Iraq in December 2011. No weapons of mass destruction were ever found in the country, but military officials say Iraq has since made a successful transition to a democratic government.
