ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
The Albany 911 center is getting a complete make-over and city leaders took the next step in moving forward in the renovation process.
Tuesday, commissioners tentatively approved the second of a three part improvement project for the center. The entire project is funded by SPLOST six money. It will cost just under a million dollars for the second part, which will be the most noticeable.
"The bottom line, it makes our job more efficient. We're able to receive the information and get it out to the appropriate agency much quicker," said Chief James Carswell with the Albany Fire Department.
"The part they voted on Tuesday will be the most visual part of the center change, meaning that what you see when you walk in there will be totally gone and a new version of that will come in. It's not only designed to be more efficient, it gives us better capabilities as far as the supervisor being able to monitor all the positions."
Carswell says the changes will also make it a more comfortable environment for the operator. Commissioners will have a final vote on the project during Tuesday's meeting.
The third phase is software enhancement. The entire project is expected to be completed in about 12 months.
