Control tower closure could bring major blow to airport business

Posted: Updated:
ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

We should learn Friday whether the control tower at Southwest Georgia Regional Airport will close.

The decision was supposed to come Monday, but the FAA was overwhelmed with appeals from airports on the closure list.

Airport director Yvette Aehle says if the tower closes, it could delay flights at the Airport.

"If this continues and our on-time numbers drop considerably, then people will stop flying out of Albany all together and go to Atlanta. That brings our employment down, which ends up losing money for Delta once and for all, so then it could be a domino effect where we could end up losing air service because of items we don't have any control over," said Aehle.

189 towers at small airports around the country are on the chopping block as part of the sequester budget cuts.
