ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

An outreach program this week will try to keep kids from smoking in a county with one of the highest rates of smoking-related illnesses in Georgia.

The United Health Foundation will sponsor various activities Wednesday at Early County High School for Kick Butts Day in an effort to empower youth to make the choice against tobacco use.

Students will participate in various activities to bring awareness to illnesses caused by tobacco use.

"In Early County, the average teenager, if they do start smoking, starts at the age of 13," said Remy Hitchins, Infectious Disease & Health Promotion Coordinator. "So we really want to try to combat those youth who do start smoking, or will use tobacco early in life. If they can see that their peers don't think it's cool, then hopefully they won't want to pick up the habit. They can kick butts that day!"

Organizers selected Early county because of its high prevalence of tobacco related illness. It ranks first in the state for lung cancer and emphysema.
