LOWNDES COUNTY, GA (WALB) -
An old bridge that connects Georgia to Florida will be torn down and replaced.
The 72-year-old bridge over the Withlacoochee River connects Georgia Highway 31 in Lowndes County with Florida Highway 145 in Madison County.
The current bridge is weight-restricted and will be replaced with a longer, taller, and wider bridge. It's a $5.3-million project.
"It's been in service for our state since 1941, so it has served its purpose. It's served our state well but it's time for a complete repair, it is structurally deficient, it is fracture critical," said Georgia DOT spokesperson, Natalie Dale.
80-percent of the project is being funded by the federal Department of Transportation and 20-percent by state.
The current bridge will stay open until the new span is completed by late summer of next year.
