Leaders look at ways to keep post office open

Albany and Dougherty County leaders are working together to try to keep the downtown post office open.

County commission chairman Jeff Sinyard and Mayor Dorothy Hubbard will meet with postal officials on Wednesday.

Monday, Sinyard told commissioners he hopes they'll consider a program, called the village concept, which lets a private company or individual run the office. It's already in place at a hardware store in Climax.

"If it's in other rural areas of Georgia, why would we not want to utilize that here in downtown Albany, keep the post office open, privatize it under an existing program that's evidently has some success in other parts of the rural areas of this country," said Sinyard.

The Postal Service's lease on the location in the old federal courthouse expires in June. Sinyard says the location may stay open until September, but he hopes they can come up with a plan for a smooth transition to keep mail service there.
