SOLON, OHIO (Toledo News Now) -

Medical examiners in Cuyahoga County have released the name of a northwest Ohio man responsible for an officer-involved shooting in Solon, OH, a suburb southeast of Cleveland.

Kevin Bailey, 22, of Sylvania Township, was killed late Sunday night following a car chase. Police say officers stopped his car around 9:45 p.m. for a routine traffic stop, but Bailey fled. He then turned onto another street, hit a curb and crashed.

Police say when they caught up with Bailey they were met with gunfire. Rounds went through both police cars. One officer was hit in the chest and arm, but was wearing a bulletproof vest.

After officers returned fire, Bailey was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both officers were treated at a local hospital and released.

Neighbors say this activity is not typical of the area.

"You don't expect this type of thing here that's for sure. Traffic stops, citations, that sort of thing, but nothing like gunshots," said a resident.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is looking into the incident.

According to Patty Mazur, director of communications for Toledo Public Schools, Bailey attended Bowsher High School in south Toledo but never graduated.

In 2011, Bailey was charged in Bowling Green Municipal Court with domestic violence and intimidating a witness. He was indicted by a grand jury in Wood County Common Pleas Court. Bailey was ordered by the court to do community service as his punishment, but violated that when he was arrested in 2012 for possession of marijuana in Bowling Green. He was allowed by the court to enter an intervention program that gives community service sentences to first-time drug offenders. His community service on the domestic violence charge was reinstated.

Throughout 2012, Bailey had a number of run-ins with Toledo police. He has been charged with possession of marijuana, illegal possession of a handgun in a vehicle, and driving without a license.  Those charges are pending in Toledo Municipal Court. Court officials say he pleaded no contest to the gun in a vehicle charge in December and was fined $182 plus court costs. He did not paid the fines.  Bailey was due in court March 27 on the marijuana possession charge.
