CAIRO, GA (WALB) -

Celebrities showed up tonight in Cairo to pay tribute to a hometown hero who made history.

The man who became a civil rights icon when he broke the color barrier in major league baseball, Jackie Robinson was born in Cairo, Georgia.

Friday, the Hall of Famer was remembered at a banquet called "A Diamond Affair" that raised money for the boys and girls club.

Boxing champ Evander Holyfield, Super Bowl winner Bill Stanfill and 5-time Olympic gold medal winning basketball player Teresa Edwards attended the tribute dinner.

Jackie Robinson's daughter, Sharon Robinson was the guest of honor.

She says her father always encouraged education and supported groups such as the boys and girls club that help young people succeed.

Saturday, the Grady County Club will officially be renamed the Jackie Robinson Boys and Girls Club of Grady County.

The club is also building a youth baseball field in the legend's honor.
