ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
Radium Springs Magnet School students enjoyed a special lunch at the home of Albany's mayor. The girls spent the week learning from the city's first female mayor and other women who are community leaders.
It's important for kids to have good role models and learn how they can become helpful parts of our community. Mayor Dorothy Hubbard wanted to show 30 girls from Radium Springs Magnet School of the Arts just what that means.
Teachers chose one girl from each class and they spent the week learning from the Mayor and other women of the community about etiquette, respect for one another, and even city government.
Mayor Dorothy Hubbard said, "I'm trying to train people in city government after I'm gone, ya know."
Today's lunch at the mayor's home gave the girls a chance to show the things they learned. The girls were excited to learn, but they were even more eager to apply what they learned in the mayor's home.
One student said after this week, she might even get into politics herself.
Courtney James said "I've had fun and I learned a lot, and I may even want to be the second female mayor.
Student Audriana Hawkins says after learning more about the mayor, that she simply inspires her. "She's a role model to me since she's the first female mayor."
Every student involved agreed. Everything they learned about personal hygiene, personal success and even cell phone etiquette, will be helpful for their future.
The Albany Chapter of The Links Inc. helped sponsor the luncheon. That's a national women's volunteer service organization. Mayor Hubbard hopes to expand the program to sixty girls and possibly to other schools.
