ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
Officials at Southwest Georgia Regional Airport are waiting to hear if their appeal will keep the air traffic control tower from closing.
It's scheduled to close April 7th as part of the sequester cuts, but the airport filed a formal appeal last week. Currently, workers don't know what to expect.
"We're all trying to figure out...how does this impact the way that air traffic is currently moving, vs. how it could move when we've got general aviation, military traffic, UPS, and an airline all operating out of the same airfield," said Yvette Aehle, Southwest Georgia Regional Airport Director.
The contractor that currently operates the tower may propose allowing the city to pay to take over those services.
The airport currently operates without a tower from 8:00pm to 8:00am. Controllers in Jacksonville take care of Albany's air traffic operations during those hours, and may have to overtake daily operations should cuts close the tower.
