ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A Dougherty County man is charged with animal cruelty after he admitted he beat his pit bull with a belt because the dog was digging holes.

A neighbor called police about 1:20 Wednesday afternoon and reported seeing 58-year-old Carey Culbert beating the male pit bull in the head.

Police and animal control found his 60-pound male dog bleeding from the head and ears and with a swollen face. At first Culbert denied hitting the dog.

"It was determined that he still had some of the dog's hair on his belt he was wearing. Then he finally admitted that he did strike the dog several times to discipline the dog from digging holes," said DCP Sgt. Chad Kirkpatrick.

Police say Culbert has a history of arrests for animal cruelty. Animal control seized all eight of his dogs for not having current rabies tags.

They are now being cared for at the Albany Humane Society.
