ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The city of Tifton has big plans to fill the seats at the Tift theatre.

The City Council has taken over the theatre from the Downtown Development Authority after a three to two vote.

Mayor Jamie Cater says there are still details to work out but he sees the great potential of the theatre.

"You know you like to brand your community and this theatre can brand downtown. We could get a lot of people coming here if we put the right act and do the right thing and so, we're looking forward to that," said Cater.

Officials say the theatre has been losing money.

Once they decide on the amount of city money to pump into the facility, they plan to make changes and they hope it will bring revenue and activity to the city.

Annual community events such as showing old movies to Tifton kids will still be held.

The Tift theatre opened in 1937.
