THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) -
A south Georgia police department wants to make it easier for people to pass along tips to help investigators solve crimes.
The Thomasville Police Department's new Text A Tip program allows you to text information to investigators anonymously.
Imagine you just witnessed a crime, but are too scared to approach a police officer for fear of being identified by the perpetrator.
"Sometimes we may not receive information that we could receive because people are afraid to call or they think information will get out that they called, but Text A Tip is strictly confidential. No information is given about who says what," said Lt. Eric Hampton.
The Thomasville Police Department has devised a system in which someone can Text A Tip anytime, anywhere.
"It can be on the scene of an incident at that time or they can just wait until they get home, they can do it later. But if they feel more comfortable being able to text it directly to our Text A Tip program," said Hampton.
Police say texts to the Text A Tip program are anonymous and your information will always be kept private.
"It's a good tool for the citizens to use. It's technology that really works for us as a police department being able to give the citizens another tool to use," said Hampton.
To text a tip, text THPD, followed by the message, to 274637.
"They can actually be on the scene and see a suspect on the scene who might have committed a particular crime and they can simply go on their cell phone and text us information that hey the suspect is right there on the crime scene," said Hampton.
Police say information texted in could result in a reward from Crimestoppers.
Crimestoppers also offers an app for Iphones and Androids. Type in Crimestoppers in the app market to find and download.
