Bail bondsman arrested for theft by deception

THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) -

A Thomas County bail bondsman is now a jail inmate himself, suspected of stealing from one of his clients.

Police say about a year ago, 24-year old Elma Tema Orozco told them he paid 40-year old bail bondsman Mike Oliver $520 following his arrest for driving while unlicensed.

Police say Oliver promised to take care of everything, but when Orozco arrived for his court date last May, the judge said his fine had not yet been paid.

"Some money had been paid to the bail bondsman for this citation and upon arrival at court the defendant was told he must pay the fine and he had stated that he had already paid the bail bondsman the money. From that time the investigation started," said Lt. Eric Hampton.

Oliver is charged with theft by deception.

Investigators say they are looking into whether there are other victims or whether this was an isolated incident.
