Pope Francis I
Bergoglio as the Cardinal of Buenos AiresThe new Pope of the Catholic Church is Jorge Bergoglio of Argentina. He was named about 3:15 Eastern Time at the Vatican in Rome.
Bergoglio breaks a long tradition of European Popes, becoming the first from the Americas.
He was born on December 17, 1936, and was the Cardinal of Buenos Aires. He will be known as Francis the First.
Bergoglio had reportedly finished second in the 2005 conclave that produced Benedict XVI - who last month became the first pope to resign in 600 years.
The 76-year-old archbishop of Buenos Aires has spent nearly his entire career at home in Argentina, overseeing churches and shoe-leather priests.
Bergoglio was trained as a chemist. He also taught literature, psychology, philosophy and theology before becoming the archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998. He became a cardinal in 2001.
