ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
The Commandant of the Marine Corps takes to Youtube to urge workers at MCLB Albany, and every other Marine installation, to do what they can to minimize the impact of sequestration.
Gen. James Amos says he's committed to keeping Marines and Civilian Marines up to date on how the forced federal budget cuts will affect them. He says he'll continue to post videos on Youtube when he gets new information.
In his first message, he urged every Marine Corps worker to do all they can to save money to minimize the impact of the cuts. "Save every round, every gallon of gas. That you take every single aspect or opportunity in training to get the most bang for the buck. This is not time to do business as usual. Things have changed. The landscape has changed," Amos said.
The General said at some point the cuts will become unsustainable, but he says he believes members of Congress want to come to a solution before than happens.
Senator Saxby Chambliss praised the Commandant for his candor and his budget slashing efforts. "I think it shows good leadership on the Commandant's part. We've got to be more judicious in the way we spend federal tax money," Chambliss said.
The Moultrie Republican also said it's the Constitutional responsibility of policymakers in Congress to ensure the security of our country, and while cuts are necessary, they can't threaten national security.
