COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

News Leader 9 was there as construction crews blew out a 100 foot section of the city mills dam Tuesday morning at about 10:30 a.m. EST.

Even though this dam is in a less-populated area, it could still create an inconvenience for some motorists as some roads will be closed.

But breaching this dam is one of the final steps organizers must take to have the course opened by Memorial Day weekend.

The two and a half mile long whitewater rafting course is scheduled to open May 25.

It should take workers about three weeks to clear the debris from today's blast.

Spectators were allowed to watch the explosion from the 14th Street pedestrian bridge beginning at 9:45 a.m.
