SYLVESTER, GA (WALB) -

Tuesday, March 5th, was a day like any other for Fletcher-Yearta jewelry store in Sylvester, until a couple of teenagers walked in the door. And just like any other customer, the two asked the store employee for a little help.

"One went in one direction and another one went in the other direction, and asked the employee there for a book which she received," said Sgt. Kenneth Washington, Sylvester Police Department Investigator. "And as she was giving one of the females the book, the other grabbed the purse and they walked out the door without paying."

Store employees said one of the girls knelt next to a statue in the front of the store, and slipped a small purse into her pocket. After that, it was just a few feet to the door before the girls made off with the $36 item.

Employees weren't sure if the girls had stolen something, but all doubt was removed after reviewing the surveillance footage.

"Well they appear to be young juveniles, young juvenile school age children. And at this point we don't have any idea who they are," he said.

Investigators say the girls could have been from out of town, but they aren't sure. Investigators are especially interested in catching the thieves to prevent future crimes.

"You know if one kid says well I got away with this, then I can get away with it. We're gonna put a stop to it before it gets big," said Washington.

While police don't yet know the identities of the young thieves yet, they're confident they will find them.   Meanwhile, anyone with information that could help solve the case is urged to contact the Sylvester Police at: (229)776-8500.
