THOMAS COUNTY, GA (WALB) -
A Thomas County couple, fed up with scams targeting seniors, say they refuse to be victims, and they don't want you to be taken advantage of either.
Donna Hanyecz says she and her husband Jack were recently spared from identity fraud.
"I'm quite sure they would wipe us out. They would take advantage and clean out the bank account and anything else they can get their hands on through that information."
Last week Donna received a call from a man she didn't know who knew her name, her address, and that she and her husband were on Medicare.
"He said we are going to send you a new medicare card and then right then and there I thought, well something is not right here. So I didn't say anything else and he said we need your banking information."
Investigators say you should never give your social security number or other banking information over the phone.
"When I hung up, I called my bank and I told them about the phone call and she assured me first of all if that were true it would never be done on the telephone. You would just get something like that through the mail," said Hanyecz.
Donna says the next day, her husband, who is hard of hearing, received the same type of call, but this time it was a woman on the other line.
"It's just a shame that as we get old we are susceptible to all this stuff. It's a shame."
The Hanyecz's did report the scams to the Thomas County Sheriff's Office. Investigators say there is not much they can do other than cautioning folks to be careful.
"We said something about being able to trace the call and he said there is no way you can trace that call because they have a block on it so we're stuck."
The Hanyecz's say they have had the same Medicare card for over 20 years and they know unless it is damaged or lost, they will never need to replace it.
