DOUGHERTY COUNTY, GA -
The Dougherty County Police Department and Sheriff's Office hope to move SPLOST money around so they can afford encryption equipment for their radio systems.
Monday, Dougherty County commissioners discussed reallocating funds so the two agencies can purchase the software. It prevents anyone with a police scanner from hearing their radio transmissions.
The city of Albany used $250,000 in SPLOST money to buy encryption equipment for Albany Police. Now, DCP and the Sheriff's officials say they have to do the same in order to hear APD transmissions.
"In order for us to be able to understand what they're saying, we also need to have encryption capability with our radios. And that will allow us to assist them, to respond to different things," said Chief Jackie Battle with DCP.
Commissioners will vote on the recommendation at their regular meeting Monday, March 18th. Chief Battle says city police have been waiting until the other two agencies have the equipment to switch over.
