ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Folks in Albany hit the ground running early on Saturday.  Sherwood Baptist held its annual Legacy Run. This is their third year holding the event and all of the proceeds will go to the Alpha Pregnancy Center.

Kids of all ages and adults came out to participate in the event. The 5k kicked off at 9:30 in the morning, the toddler trot and one mile run got underway shortly after. In many competitions, runners hope to finish first, but the third annual Legacy Run is about far more than taking home a gold medal.

Amy Parr one of the event organizers, tells me that this is their best turnout yet.  "Attendance has done really well, it's gone up every year that we've done it, and I think this is the biggest year yet," said Parr.

One college student says she woke up today, and she just felt like running so she headed to the event.  She just happened to cross the finish line first in the 5k run.  "I feel good, like I've accomplished something, I go to college so I'm always stressed out but it was nice to get up on a Saturday morning and I just feel like I've accomplished my week's goal," said Elena Oslund.

Running isn't the only thing these folks are accomplishing today, they're also giving back to a center that has been helping young mothers to be for over 20 years. "There are lots of girls out there that get into a situation, they don't know what to do and they need help so we can give them that," said Parr.

Although the race was tough on some, the reasons to put one foot in front of the other were enough to keep going. Joe Strength is on the board of directors for The Pregnancy Center in Lee County and he says it's important for the community to band together for such a great cause, but there are other reasons to come out.

Waking up early on a weekend to run takes dedication. Finishing the race takes commitment. Knowing that they're investing in a cause greater than themselves is priceless. In addition to the run there were plenty of other events.  Folks could listen to music, go rock climbing, or go fishing in the pond. There was a little something for everyone and a lot of family fun.
