ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

There was a lot of noise on Rosebrier Avenue Thursday. Chainsaws, hammers and nails. All a part of building a home for an Albany family.

College students from Ohio Northern University, Sacred Heart University, and the University of Mary Washington are spending their spring break getting the house ready.

"A lot of us live in homes our whole life, and don't know what it takes to build it.  If you don't have one, where do we go from there?" said Joseph Stecyk.

The students say they are excited to give back, and feel this is an enlightening experience.

"These people work their whole lives to have something unfortunate happen and we try to give back to them. So a piece of wood and nail could mean someone's life, so to have the opportunity to come down and serve is incredible to have that blessing to give to others," said Stecyk.

Student Kate Gallagher understands how a home could mean so much to the people who live in it.

"I know how much my home means to me and how much I love coming back to a place I feel safe and secure. So why wouldn't you want to help build that for someone else," said Kate Gallagher.

And that's exactly what these students plan to do. Make it safe and secure.

The home will have a wheelchair accessible ramp and a back porch. That was a special request from the family.

In about one week, the home will be complete and the family will be ready to move in.

"This is going to be great for him and his family which is all someone could ask for when you need some help," said Kate Gallagher.

The students tell us the family has been through some tough times and they just happy they can ease some of their burdens with a new home.
