ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
The planes taking off from Georgia's Southwest Regional Airport will soon take off from the new 25,000 sq. ft. terminal, located right behind the old building.
The new building, set to open this summer, will have the modern conveniences of larger airports with new furniture, an open floor plan, a modern design and even a space set aside for a snack bar.
"Completion is expected on June the 12th. So we plan on adhering to that schedule, and hopefully we'll be able to start using the building by the end of June," said Yvette Aehle, Director of Albany Airport.
Much of the community may be excited for the new addition, but some may be asking what changes the $10.8 Million terminal will bring to the city. Aehle said the new terminal could make Albany more attractive to outside business.
"People don't really understand that an airport contributes to a community," she said. "We want to be the first impression that they have of Albany. And if they've never been here before, the airport is the first and last impression that a city has to make on people that are arriving here on business."
Construction began last March, and has steadily been moving along, but there's still plenty of work to be done. All the parts of an airport must be in sync when the new building's finally ready.
"Obviously there's a lot of coordination that's involved when opening a new terminal because we have to relocate the rental car concessionaires, TSA with their folks and equipment, and the airline obviously. So, all of that would have to happen at the same time," said Aehle.
The new airport will now have two emergency generators, should the city's power go out, which will be able to keep the terminal running at full capacity for up to 96 hours.
Delta will continue to be the service provider at the new terminal, though Aehle said she will continue to keep an eye out for new airlines who might be interested in Albany airport.
