Police want you to take a tax season scam alert seriously.

Albany Police are reminding residents how difficult it can be to recover from identity theft, which can pick during tax season.

They say you can protect yourself by shredding important documents, keeping important papers away from places where they might easily be stolen, and just being mindful of your surroundings.

"Around tax time we do occasionally see an increase of identity theft," said Phyllis Banks, Albany Police media manager. "A lot of people come in and report that someone has used their identity to file a tax return."

Police say if you suspect you may be a victim of identity theft you should call your local law enforcement agency and report it.
