Historic marker erected in Thomasville

THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) -

The first of a series of new historic markers is up in Thomasville.

The Glenwood Historic District marker tells the story behind the historic Glenwood subdivision.

The marker resulted from a partnership between Thomasville Landmarks, the City of Thomasville, and the National Society of Colonial Dames.

"By recognizing the districts via a marker, we are able to tell the community the history of the places where they live and where they visit. And it's also a great way for the city to capitalize on the heritage tourism market. Which is a huge economic driver for the state of Georgia," said Thomasville Landmarks Director Brent Runyon.

Thomasville Landmarks Director Brent Runyon says he hopes one day to see a marker in each of Thomas County's 12 historic districts, but they'll need donations from the community.

Each marker costs $3,500.
