ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Albany city commissioners take a first step toward building a new fire station.

Tuesday commissioners tentatively approved a bid from a Bainbridge construction company to build a new fire station three on Honeysuckle Drive.

The current building on Holly Drive is built on a limesink and over the past several years the building has had some serious structural damage.

The bid of $894,000 exceeds the budgeted amount by more than $149,000.

"We were anticipating lower bids than that, based on the exact same station we had built eight years ago and then one about 15 years ago. We were hoping the economy would be in our favor as far as the bid price and it didn't work out that way," said Chief James Carswell with the Albany Fire Department.

Commissioners will officially vote on the bid at their next night meeting. Construction is expected to begin 30 to 45 days after that.

The Albany fire department is also working to relocate the fire station on Mock Road, which also has structural problems.
