ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
We're not sure yet when furloughs will begin at Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany, but the Commandant of the Marine Corps is warning about the impact of the forced budget cuts.
In an open letter to all Marines and Civilian Marines, Gen. James Amos said the Corps is now implementing $1.4 billion in cuts for this fiscal year and will have to cut $2 billion more each year for the next 9 years.
Amos says the cuts will significantly impact short-term and long-term Marine Corps readiness. The Commandant says the Corps is "already a lean and frugal service, thus every reduction that we make from this point forward will cut into bone... We are beyond muscle."
