ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

More than a thousand runners laced up their sneakers and braved the cold weather to run in the Seventh Annual Albany marathon.  Whether the runners were going for a new personal record, or just trying to finish, the event was a success.

One by one, and some in groups, runners crossed the finish line at the Thronateeska Heritage Center on Saturday. Some runners were top finishers while others are just glad that they were able to finish the race.

"It feels good since this is my first marathon, and to win, it is a pretty huge deal," said female overall winner Taylor Stephens.

The marathon categories are divided by age groups and gender, there is also a group for masters that includes runners that are 40 and over. Participants in the half marathon run were required to run 13.1 miles while full marathon runners completed 26.2 miles.

Despite the cool weather, runners focused on their times. "The runners like to run when it's cold, it could've been a few degrees warmer but the runners like colder weather, they actually have better times," said chairperson Barry Cohen.

The marathon's chair person says almost 1500 runners participated in the race. "It's normal to have anywhere from 25 to 30 different states. Every now and again we'd have one or two from out of the country but today is the first time we've had three from out of the country," said the chairperson.

There is no denying that the runners gave it what they had on Saturday."I just promised myself that I would cut my legs off if I had to and leave them out there," said marathon runner Margo Gregory.

Whether these marathon runners move on to another competition or not today's achievement is one to remember.
