QUITMAN, GA (WALB) -

Highway 84 in Brooks County is closed from mile marker 13 to I-75 because of water on the road.

Officials are detouring traffic to Highway 333 in Quitman for eastbound traffic, and Hwy 133, Exit 18 at I-75 for westbound traffic.

Lowndes County has many areas with standing water as well. The parking lot and playground at the Valdosta/Lowndes County YMCA are mostly submerged at noon Friday.

All the water is a nightmare for the sanitation department in Valdosta. The system has been swamped by water from the Withlacoochee River watershed system, and it has overwhelmed the city's efforts to keep sewer water separated from flood water.

The city says that up to six million gallons of untreated sewage will be discharging directly into the river each day until the flood waters recede, and the treatment plant can be returned to normal operation.

Valdosta has closed Gornto Road at the Earl Wetherington Foot Bridge near the YMCA, due to exceeding water levels of the Sugar Creek indefinitely. The Engineering Department is in constant contact with the Lowndes County EMA regarding information on the Withlacoochee River crest activity.

Stephen Abel is reporting from Brooks County and Lowndes County today, and will have more information later on WALB.
