ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Folks who linger in the fast lane had better move over when faster cars come up behind you.

A bill, making it illegal to clog the passing lane, is on the move in the House.

It's a pet peeve many drivers on the go often complain about but for many left lane drivers, slow moving cars can cause major problems.

That's why state House members are considering passing a bill that would allow law enforcement officers to ticket folks going slow in the fast lane on any Georgia interstate.

The bill is sponsored by House Republican Bill Hitchens, who was a former head of the state Department of Public Safety.

He says House Bill 459 would make it illegal to drive under the speed limit in the left lane. Georgia drivers say it's step toward making interstates a safer place to travel.

"If you're in the fast lane, go the speed limit which is what you're suppose to do. Other people can be in a hurry but if you go slow, stay in the slow lane," says Georgia driver Melinda Timpson.

The restrictions would not apply to police, paramedics, firefighters, other emergency vehicles, or to highway maintenance and construction traffic.

The bill next goes to the full House Motor Vehicles Committee for consideration.
