ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
A new housing plan in West Central Albany is moving forward and those behind it want support from the school system.
Wednesday, Dougherty County school board members heard about "the Oaks at North Intown." The Albany Housing Authority is behind the plan which would revitalize McIntosh homes and the neighborhood surrounding Lincoln Elementary and Albany High.
The plan has been in the works for the past two years and now organizers are applying for grants to make it come to life.
"It's critical- one of the things we talked about is a neighborhood of choice. A place where people want to go to live. And schools are certainly a big part of anyone's decision. Where am I going to buy a house? Where am I going to move to? They want to know what the school zones are like and is that a place for my children?" said Dan McCarthy, the Executive Director of the Albany Housing Authority.
Organizers hope to finalize their plan in the next couple of months and send it to the Department of Housing and Urban Development for approval.
The project would take five to ten years to complete.
