VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

The Valdosta Police Department has a new chief who is a familiar face.

The city announced Tuesday night that Brian Childress is being promoted to the top job in the department.

He joined VPD in 2001 and most recently was Commander of the Investigative Bureau.

He previously worked in the Perry Police Department and served 8 years in the Air Force and 15 in the Air Force Reserves.

Childress replaces retiring Chief Frank Simons.
