MOULTRIE, GA (WALB) -
The 50th Regiment Marching Band of Colquitt County High School was accepted in September to play in the Mass Band Performance at the opening ceremonies to the Daytona 500.
They performed in front of around 100,000 people for the opening ceremonies. The mass band was about 530 members strong, and Colquitt County contributed 65 members.
The students spent the last month and a half learning three patriotic numbers performed at the race.
Band members and chaperones left on Thursday morning, and took in a performance of the Blue man Group.
Friday was spent at Universal Studios and Universals Islands of Adventure. The group rehearsed Saturday at the old Amway Center and then spent the evening racing cars at the Fun Stop of Orlando.
They rose at 4:30AM and made it to Daytona for the performance.
"The kids had a fantastic trip," said Director of Bands Liz Savage. "I am so pleased with the direction of our band program. The only thing that would have made the trip better is if every single student were there."
The 50th Regiment spent 5 days and 4 nights in Orlando and Daytona with this event.
