Heavy rain caused a major sewage spill into the Withlacoochee River.
It's a recurring problem Valdosta city leaders are working to prevent.
Excess storm water caused an overflow at the Withlacoochee Water Pollution Control Plant.
City officials plan to move the entire plant to higher ground because the land is in a flood zone area.
The city has purchased higher land but is still waiting to get finances in order.
"We've got a lot of storm water, river water, coming into the system; that causes the plant to be overwhelmed, especially when the rivers get high, streams get high. So now we're not treating just sewage, we're treating storm water and sewage," said Utilities Dir., Henry Hicks.
Right now, officials are asking residents to avoid contact with the Withlacoochee River.
