Flooding closes roads in Thomas Co.

THOMAS CO., GA (WALB) -

Turn around, don't drown.

That's the message being spread all over south Georgia as rain continue to fall.

In Thomas County, high water shut down several paved and dirt roads.

And closures could happen.

If you drove anywhere in Thomas or any other south Georgia County Monday, your car probably received a natural wash.

"We're monitoring the radar. We're monitoring the National Weather Service. We're getting all the information out to all our emergency services functions," said EMA Director Lisa Griffis.

Several inches of rain fell in Thomasville and surrounding cities Sunday night and all day Monday resulting in road closures.

Roads like Bannister in Coolidge and Cone in Thomasville.

"I recommend if you don't have to go anywhere, don't. Stay home. Stay off the roads. If you come across water sitting in the road, high water, don't go through it. The slogan is turn around, don't drown," said Griffis.

Emergency officials say it's not only important to be cautious during the storm, but also after it.

"We got a lot of water above us Friday and Saturday and now we're adding to our water today. So we're going to be pretty busy this week watching it, watching our rivers, watching our creeks. Just stay tuned to the news and the National Weather Service," said Griffis.

While emergency officials only recommend driving if you absolutely have to, all Thomas County schools remain open for Tuesday.
