Lowndes car breakin arrests made

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

Demetrius Swopes of Hahira and Israel Smith of Valdosta are behind bars after a rash of car breakins in the Lowndes County area.

Lowndes Sheriff Chris Prine has released this news alert with detailed information-

On Friday morning, around 4:00 deputies were called to the parking lot of Northwind Apartments regarding the break in to a vehicle. While responding the deputies noticed two people walking on Northwind Boulevard and stopped to question them.

The people were identified as Demetrius Swopes and Israel Smith. During the encounter with the males they were searched and property, such as a knife, Apple I-Pod, telephone charger, GPS unit and other items was found. Believing that this items had been taken from vehicles, the males were arrested by deputies and transported to the Lowndes County Jail.

Investigators from the Sheriff's Office interviewed both Swopes and Smith during which the pair admitted their involvement in many of the recent car break-ins in both the city and the county. Detectives from the Valdosta Police Department were notified.

Demetrius Swopes and Israel Smith have been charged with multiple counts of Entering an automobile to commit a theft, a felony.

Sheriff Prine has indicated that this investigation is on-going and additional charges may be forthcoming as the investigation continues. Persons with information are asked to contact investigators at {229} 671-2950 or on-line at www.lowndessheriff.com.
