LEE CO., GA (WALB) -

Despite the rain, many showed up for the 9/11 Heroes Run and Walk on Saturday in Lee County.

Folks honored fallen soldier Steve Sutton with the unveiling of a memorial that will remain in front of the courthouse. Sutton was killed in Afghanistan back in May. After the ceremony children and adults laced up their shoes for the 5k race.

"We're just really encouraged with the turnout! It's very important to us in this town to be together as a community, to support each other, to support our troops overseas and to support all of the individuals that work in a hazardous field," said Alicia Arnold Director of the Lee branch YMCA.

It means a lot to me, big time and Steven, he wouldn't have wanted all of this fuss over him because he was just a country dude," said Gene Sutton the father of the fallen soldier being honored during the event.

Event organizers say today was a huge success.
