Former Albany business owner laid to rest

The longtime owner of a former Albany business will be laid to rest Saturday and the landmark sign from that business will be on display at the funeral.

Lee Johnston Senior died Wednesday.

He founded the Arctic Bear more than 60-years ago.

Generations of people enjoyed ice cream cones and hamburgers there and loved the iconic spinning marquee of a polar bear licking an ice cream cone.

The family donated the sign to Thronateeska Heritage Center after the business closed in 1995, but felt it was important to get it back on loan for tonight's visitation and tomorrow's funeral.

"It's to show respect because that was his business he owned when he started it in 1950 to 1995 and it's just a community landmark," said grandson Lee Johnston III

Johnston's funeral begins at 11 am Saturday at Gillionville Baptist Church.
