ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Public health officials are urging you to learn the risk factors of heart disease and take steps to reduce them.

You should schedule regular screenings, maintain a healthy diet, exercise regularly, and stay away from tobacco. They say it's also important to know the symptoms of heart attack and stroke.

Sue Ewings with the Dougherty County Women's Health Program said, "Symptoms that would warrant calling 911 like a stroke, slurred speech, problems with your speech, sudden onset of major headache, things of that nature, weakness in your arms or legs warrant a call to 911, seeing your physician. That's an emergency."

Knowing your family history also helps calculate your risk of having a stroke or developing heart disease.
